Comments: I was an AE-2 wwith HU-2 from Lakehurst New Jersey. I went North in the summer of 1960 to re-supply the BMEWS at Thule. Fellow crewmen were Robert Bonner, Earl Gadd, and XXXX Chamblis. Bonner was an AT-2, Gadd an AD-3. I think an AD-2 named Phil Rituno (sp?) was the head mechanic. The detachment commander was Lt.jg R. Nelson. He was blond and tall and congenial. We flew HTL (Bell, with the plexiglass bubble) and HRS (Sikorsky, the big one with a side door for cargo and people. We lived in the forward crew quarters and got along with everyone. We also spent a lot of time in a small compartment under the flight deck. Cruise wa suneventful except for rescuing some sailors who went "mountain climbing" near Thule and got stuck on a ledge...they were darn lucky to get rescued by the chopper. Also we went through a hurricane on the way back to Boston...Cleo??? It was a monster storm. All my PIX except for one or two have been lost but I'll see what I can co

Comments:I was on the "Eddy" as a deck force SN in 64-65. Deepfreeze '65 and two northern cruises one of which was the Arlis II rescue. I remember as part of turning her over to the Coast Guard I had to do a complete inventory of my space which was the after hold. I remember finding various bottles of booze which had been hidden there over the years and then forgotten. As I checked out supplies and tools in the next few days I would hand out the occasional bottle. I made a lot of friends that week. Great site, thanks for all the work that goes into it.

Send me an email at billp8@mindspring.com or call me at 770-973-4590. I was a radioman. Went aboard the Edisto as RMSN in 1961-62 and stayed aboard Edisto until 1964 and made RM2. I went to the South Pole once and North Pole several times. The ship went to Thule Greenland; Iceland; Oslo, Norway; Panama Canal Zone; and the best of all New Zealand. I remember the girls swimming out to meet the ship the first time we pulled into Lyttleton harbour and liberty in Christchurch. Anyone remember any of these great times? Get in touch and let's share some of these memories. Take care. Bill Poston RM2

Comments:I was assigned to EDISTO DAY AGB-2 in February 1947 (Precommissioning Detail) as a member of the Crew. I worked for a "Pin-stripe" Warrant officer (I believe he was either Bos'n or Supply I'm not certain) to outfit and ready the ship for commissioning. The ship was at Wilmington, California and we berthed at the Naval Station Long Beach where we were fed and paid. "Dusty" from Phoenix Arizona was a good friend, we were assigned to EDISTO,worked together and had been Galley Slaves at the Naval Station Galley in January 1947. I lost contact with the Crew when I was sent to Fleet Sonar School after the Ship's Commissioning in April 1947. I am proud that I have found the EDISTO BAY Website and look forward to conversing with some of the other "Plankowners" Please pass the word for me, this is a great feeling to find the crews. Glenn

Comments: I was a radioman stationed at NavCommSta Keflavik 1964-1965. During the spring of 1965, the ice island, Arliss II, was floating down into the Denmark Straits between Iceland and Greenland and breaking up in the warmer waters. The scientists needed to be rescued, but their airstrip was cracked. The Edisto was dispatched from Boston, where it had only recently docked for replenishment and refit from an Antarctic tour. Since I had been one of the radio operators in the communications center assigned to monitor the ARLISS II circuit while on watch, my CO asked me if I wanted to go TDY onboard Edisto to help out in the radio gang. Seeing as how it (1) would my first real sea duty experience, (2) would be a trip up into the ice pack, (3) would be an Arctic Circle crossing, and (4) would be an honor to be part of the rescue team, I jumped at it. It was the trip of a lifetime for me and much more than I can relate in this note. I have written up some of it on my webpage at

REMEMBER THE SHIPS PARTY IN CHRISTCHURCH WOW! AND AUCKLAND THATS ALL FOR NOW AS I AM JUST LEARNING TO USE THIS COMPUTOR.

Comments:I served aboard the EDISTO during Operation Deepfreeze One as a Radioman First Class. I recall obtaining daily activity reports of the operation from Bernard Kalb, news reporter from the New York Times and William Hartigan of NBC news and transmitting their lengthy reports to our closest naval radion station in Guam, who in turn would relay them to Washington, DC. I also received a paper deed from Cmdr. Luther when the ship came upon an unchartered piece of land which he named "EDISTO ACRES." It was an experience one could never forget.

Comments:Boarded the Edisto in the North Atlantic via an oil tanker approximately July 1959. I was a seaman personnelman assigned to the engineering dept to maintain records. Also served a short period on messcooking duties. During my short tour we stopped in St Johns Newfoundland, Halifax Nova Scotia also went through a hurricane to rescue a Danish ship in distress. One interesting experience while assigned was I was on deck watch while the ship was anchored and the captain ordered me and one other person to drop the anchor without the normal crew. For me I had never been around an anchor and appreciated having at least one person who knew how. I left the ship in approvimately May 1960.

After all these years I'm amazed at how much I fondly remember about my tour aboard Edisto. And of course I still have both cruise books, my Arctic, Antarctic, shell back and Golden Dragon scrolls, ships patches, etc., so that helps. I reported aboard right out of boot on Dec 26th 1959, while Edisto was in dry dock at Beth Steel in East Boston and left Edisto in May 1961 while she was in dry dock at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. There must be a message there somewhere. After a short career in deck division I reenlisted under the Star Program and moved down to engineering and the electrical division as an IC striker and got my real start in a Navy career. I retired in 84 as an ICC at the Seabee Base in Gulfport, MS, where I was Director of the Counseling and Assistance Center. Following retirement I was site Coordinator for Th

He retired in 1959 as a captain, upon retirement he was promoted to rear admiral. He retired to a farm in Indiana where he was pretty much a gentleman farmer until his death in 1978 at age 65. My dad was the captain of three ships in his career, besides the Edisto, there was an LSD, the Shadwell and an ammunition ship, the Rainier. I believe that the Edisto was his favorite, certainly it was the most interesting. I enjoyed your web site. It brought back fond memories of my visits to the ship to watch movies in the wardroom and explore the many wonders of an icebreaker. Thank you. Sincerely, Fred Morrison

Comments:Your excellent site has stirred some ancient memories! I toured Edisto as a civilian visitor on Armed Forces Day 1950 in Boston, never imagining that I would one day go to sea in her. That happened when I served aboard the ship as an AG2 (weather-guesser) from Oct 1954 to Feb 1955. Oddly enough, I was in Thule aboard another ship when Edisto arrived there in the summer of 1952 during Operation Sunac. My most vivid memory is of Edisto bucking heavy seas during a storm northeast of Cape Hatteras. We had to abandon the aerology shack on the main deck and set up shop in the chart room above the navigation bridge where we spent much of the time on the deck clinging to the legs of a table. When we needed more weather charts, I made the trip back to the aerology shack at the end of a line held by one of the boatswain's mates. The last time I saw Edisto, I was a civilian again standing on the shore of Castle Island as she left Boston en route to Antarctica in the fall of 1955.

Comments:I just got a couple of emails and had to submit my thoughts. The first had to do with funding this website and I'm totally in favor of it. I was on the 61' cruise when we went through "THE STORM" and I remember vividly how scarred and helpless I felt at my work station in B1. I even wrote a journal and sealed it in saranwrap, hoping that someone would find it if they found my dead body someday. I also remember going up to the messdeck and bumping into other shipmates and getting encouragement from them that we would get thru this. This website has brought back those feelings of support and comraderie that we all shared back then. We were all in it together. The second email I got was from Bill Gallant regarding Jim Gill. I never went ashore with Bill or remember spending much time with him onboard but I do know that he was part of "MY FAMILY" during that cruise and he needs my help now, along with all of us. Kinda like 1961 isn't it. Let's give Jim a call and support this site. I'm not

I shall never forget this cruise, it took me somewhere not all people are privileged to see. It was a great old ship with the best group of men of any ship I was ever on. I was an enlisted man with the rate of Petty Officer 3rd class. It is great that you folks are trying to stay connected via the web. I was a cook (CS3) and looking forward to leaving a flat bottom coastal tanker that would pitch and roll when a canoe passed. What and education when the Edisto left port. Thought I was back on a flat bottom. We made a couple trips north before my separation in March of 1953. Do not remember the Co's name, his wife was from Grondel, Greenland. We were in Grondel on one trip but could not visit the town, we were restricted to the Danish Naval Base for liberty. Not sure who the Captain was trying to impress but we were standing a personnel inspection one Saturday AM on the dock in a snow storm. The Danish sailors had a good laugh at us in the club later that day. The ship was enroute to Thule in Jan/Feb '53 We were accompanied by another Ice Breaker, possibly the Atka, whose CO was evidently senior to ours and in charge of the expedition. Comments:What a great web site! Not sure I'm in the right place but if anyone here could help me... I'm searching the web for any information on the Order of the Royal Blue Noses. My father, Robert Patterson, served in the US Airforce in SAC in the early fifties. He died when I was very young and I am seeking any information on military people that might have known him. I have a wonderful photo of an ice breaker that looks like the Edisto but shows the numbers "W279" on the side. He served in Greenland and the Artic Circle and I vaguely remember a certificate that he had of the Order of the Royal Blue Noses. He grew up in Scotland before comming to the states in the 40's. I believe he served in the Royal Airforce as well. He was a hydrolics engineer for helicopters. He would have been 75 this year. If anyone has any information, no matter how unrelated, or could point me in the right direction to continue my search, I'd greatly appreciate it. Bless you all~ Barbara Patterson Moore

Lucas, Store Keeper 2nd class, served aboard the Edisto during Operation Deep Freeze and he often told me about the great ice storm. He was very proud of his service aboard the Edisto and the photo of his ship still hangs on the wall at home of his widowed wife Ruth Ann Lucas. Terry Lucas passed away in Feb. 1997 after a long battle with cancer. All my brothers and myself were Navy men. What a fine bunch of men!! God Bless!

Comments:Received telephone confirmation today of the final disposition of EDISTO. The Boston Metals Company of Baltimore, Maryland sold her to the Union Minerals Corporation of Carey, New Jersey and they scrapped her. The only thing remaining of her are a few technical manuals that they are using as reference and two or three pictures. I am extremely glad to say they are sending me one or two of the pictures! I will send them on to yeolde as quickly as I get them.

Comments:I've had the opportunity to talk with the USCG regarding EDISTO. I received a brief history of her from 20 Oct 65 until her decommission 15 Nov 74 which I will be e-mailing to yeolde! To do her right I feel her history should be complete (even if it ended with the USCG). Also Maritime Admin said the GSA got her because her tonnage was too small for them. She was sold 29 Sep 1977 to Boston Metals Co.- Baltimore. I'm waiting on a call from them.
